In many countries of the world, we get to see strange things but the events that usually occur in Pakistan are rarely seen. Pakistan is the only country where media earns more in current affairs instead of entertainment unlike the media of other countries of the world. It is because our public gets entertained through current affairs.
Former chief minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, who is in NAB’s custody on alleged corruption, has been recently appointed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. It is like a cat guarding milk. It is not only the matter of Shahbaz Sharif being chairman of PAC. But it is surprising to see that how in the last decade taxpayer’s money was spent like water in luxurious projects including Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan metro bus and orange line train projects, the audit of all developmental projects and inquiring about the pending corruption cases in NAB and FIA will be done by Shahbaz Sharif who is himself accused of corruption and is in custody.
Isn’t it funny? It is like NAB will inquire Shahbaz Sharif in jail in the morning and later in the day, Shahbaz Sharif will take account of pending corruption cases in NAB. It is said an iron cuts iron, similarly the corrupt will eliminate corruption.
In such scenario, how can somebody expect a transparent audit plan will be implemented against the development projects in the last ten years started by Shahbaz Sharif himself and his elder brother Nawaz Sharif who is in jail on corruption charges?
PTI came into power through its struggle and a massive campaign against corruption. Elimination of corruption is the ruling party’s slogan on which people believed and voted them in power. If such decisions will be taken, how do we assume that the government and Prime Minister Imran Khan is determined and honest in bringing back the looted wealth of the nation?
The beauty of such democracy will be only found in Pakistan.
Since coming into power, PTI government stood its ground saying that besides opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif and Member National Assembly Khawaja Asif, any member of the opposition will be accepted as PAC chairman by the government. But the PTI government had to take U-turn on its decision. According to the statement, Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that the opposition has accomplished its purpose by blackmailing the government. Because the opposition has been disrupting the proceedings of the House nor the government has a clear majority in the federation that it can make legislation without associating the opposition.
The PTI Government without taking the pressure of opposition into account must review its decision of giving chairmanship of PAC to Shahbaz Sharif. Pakistanis who were hoping for a transparent accountability and wanting to know about the looted wealth will be very disappointed by this decision.
